Location details
Built | 1898 |
Janis Joplin’s first rock group, Big Brother and the Holding Company, were living and rehearsing here when she moved from Texas to San Francisco in the mid-1960s, although the 1898 building’s been altered from how it looked then. The 25-room Victorian rented for a total of $675/month (not a misprint). As Big Brother got off the ground, some jam sessions were held in the basement that the public could attend for fifty cents.
