BORDERLINE ORNAMENTS Co-curated by Irena Popiashvili and Araks Sahakyan October 13 - November 20, 2023 Folk Arts Museum of Yerevan after Hovhannes Sharambeyan 64 Abovyan St, Yerevan, Armenia The exhibition unites a group of international contemporary artists who specialize in various traditional materials, primarily textiles. The exhibition challenges boundaries of art and craftsmanship through the work of these artists. Textiles are hypersensitive and flexible surfaces that historically been intertwined with women and their cultural expressions. By intervening in the museum’s collection and juxtaposing contemporary artworks with pieces from the permanent collection, the exhibition aims to highlight the material and conceptual links of craftwork from folk art to contemporary art forms. The exhibition includes sketches and drawings by the participating artists that show the evolution of artistic ideas before they are transformed into intricate “ornamental” textile pieces.
