The Ospedale Maggiore, most known as Ca' Granda de' Milanesi (grand house of the Milanese), was built in 1451 by the order of Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan. The aim of the project, designed by Filarete, was to provide a hospital for all Milanese people, regardless of their social class. It took a few centuries to complete the grand oeuvre, due to a lack of funds and changes to the project being made during construction. Between October 1942 and August 1943, Milan was heavily bombed by Anglo-American forces, resulting also in heavy damages in the Ca' Granda. Liliana Grassi was appointed from 1948 to 1985 for the restoration of the building, at first collaborating with Piero Portaluppi and Ambrogio Annoni, and then as only responsible for the works. The restoration varies from a more conservative approach in some of the medieval yards of the nowadays Università Statale di Milano, to a more creative modernist design.
