The cable car station is located in the courtyard of the Academy of Sciences. It connects to the station in the Mtatsminda Recreation and Entertainment Park. The building was built in the style of modernism by architect Konstantin Chkheidze. The first cable car in Tbilisi was opened in 1957 and connected Shota Rustaveli Square with the park on Mount Mtatsminda. Its length was 906 meters, on which two 25-seat cabins moved at a speed of 6 meters per second. The transit stopped working on June 1, 1990, after a tragic accident when one of the cars crashed into the lower station, and the other into the mast killing 20 people. 45 people were seriously injured. In 1966, a cable car line was opened from Vake Park, then Pobeda Park to Turtle Lake, with a length of 1140 meters.
