Francis Ford Coppola wrote much of the screenplay for The Godfather at this popular cafe, a North Beach institution. Opened in 1956, it was the first coffeehouse to specialize in espresso on the west coast, and has featured live opera singers on Saturdays. Jefferson Airplane/Starship singer-guitarist Paul Kantner, who lived nearby, could be regularly found here on early mornings for many years.
