Calakmul, located in the Mexican state of Campeche and close to the Guatemalan border, is an ancient Maya archaeological site deep in the jungles of the greater Petén Basin region. This area was one of the largest and most powerful cities of the Maya lowlands, with a distance of 35 kilometres (22 mi) from the Guatemalan border.
