Chagres and Fort San Lorenzo

In 1502, Christopher Columbus discovered the Chagres River while on his fourth and last voyage. Chagres (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈtʃaɣɾes]) is now an abandoned village located at the historic Fort San Lorenzo (Spanish: Fuerte de San Lorenzo) site, which is about 8 miles (13 km) west of Colón, and overlooks the mouth of the Chagres River. Chagres was once the principal Atlantic port on the isthmus of Panama.
