Now doing business as the Maggie McGarry’s pub, in the early 1960s this housed the Coffee Gallery, one of North Beach’s most vibrant coffeehouses. Major beat authors like Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Bob Kaufman gave readings here, and Janis Joplin gave performances on the premises in her pre-rock days in the early 1960s when she was primarily a folk and blues singer. Jefferson Airplane singer Grace Slick did her first shows here in late 1965 as the lead vocalist of the Great Society, the group she fronted before joining the Airplane.
