An Armenian higher education institution, it operated exactly for one century, from 1824 to 1924. It was founded by Bishop Nerses V Ashtaraketsi, Armenian primate of the diocese of Georgia (later Catholicos of All Armenians Nerses V), after whom it was named. The honorary trustees of the seminary were: Alexander Mantashev, Alexander Melik-Azaryants, Gevork Evangulyan, and Mikhail Aramyants. Leading experts of that time, masters of literature, scientists, and composers taught at the seminary. For example, literature and language were taught by the founder of the Armenian historical novel, Hovsep Shishmanyan, better known under the pseudonym Tserents. The well-known Armenian writer, scientist, and public figure Perch Proshyan also taught at the seminary. Children were taught music and singing by the famous composer Makar Yekmalyan. The school officially closed in 1924. The building is now home to the Caucasus University, which is one of the most prominent higher education institutions in Georgia and the South Caucasus region.
