Location details
Built | 1901 |
Architects | Marius Jan Hulswit |
Originally designed by Dutch architect Marius Hulswit, built in 1901 and opened in 1903, the now dilapidated building was originally the home of the Algemeene Maatschappij van Levensverzekering en Lijfrente, which went bankrupt in 1921. What’s notable are the winged catish-like guardians (they’re actually supposed to be lions, giving the building its current name “Lion Building”) at the base and an Art Nouveau panel above the gates. The panel was done by Jan Toorop, a Dutch-Indonesian painter who, despite leaving Indonesia as a child showed Javanese influence through his later work.
