Janis Joplin lived in this apartment in this 1900 building for about a year starting in early 1967, a time that saw her rise to stardom as singer of Big Brother & the Holding Company. For a while in spring 1967, she lived here with fellow early Bay Area psychedelic rock star Country Joe McDonald, singer with Berkeley’s Country Joe & the Fish. In a 2016 interview with the Berkeley Historical Society, he ascribed the end of their relationship to the “commute from the East Bay to San Francisco. We both agreed it was like, no. She definitely was not gonna commute to Berkeley.”
