Across the street from Golden Gate Park a few blocks west of the University of San Francisco, the “Airplane House” is named after the city’s most successful psychedelic rock band, Jefferson Airplane. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, much of band lived and worked in this four-story 1904 mansion, which was black at the time (and currently white). The cover of their live concert album Bless Its Pointed Little Head shows the aftermath of one party held here, picturing unconscious bassist Jack Casady. When original woman singer Signe Anderson and original guitarist/singer Paul Kantner died in 2016, the present owners let fans leave memorials on the front steps for a few weeks.
