Imagine the surprise of visitors to Tbilisi encountering not one, but two "Mother of Kartvel" statues! The monument to ქართლის დედა (GE) (Mother of Georgia) was erected on top of the Sololaki Ridge, then Komsomolskaya Alley, in 1958. The original monument was made of wood, but later, in 1962, it was covered with aluminum. In 1998, the old sculpture was replaced with a new one, which slightly differs from the previous version. The author is Georgian sculptor Elguja Amashukeli.
