Once upon a time, a giant sign above the entrance to the theatre read "Folk House after K.I. Zubalov" in Russian. The theater was built by the four Zubalov brothers, Stephan, Peter, Jacob, Levan, and dedicated to the memory of their father, Konstantin Zubalov, who was an avid art lover. The People’s House provided a 600 seat performance hall for amateur theatre troupes, an auditorium for community-building events, and a library.  The construction of the building designed by Stefan Kryczyński was completed in 1909 and cost Zubalovs 350 thousand gold rubles. The opening ceremony took place on April 7, 1909. The Folk House excelled in its beauty folk theaters of Moscow and Odessa and quickly became the central stage for cultural events. It also got the nickname "cheap" for having the most affordable tickets in the city. Nine theater troupes performed on the stage of the theater in different languages, Georgian, Armenian, Russian, Azerbaijani, etc. The Folk House existed until the establishment of Soviet power in Georgia. Later it was renamed the Workers' Club, and since 1930 it's the new home of Kutaisi Theater, founded by the famous Georgian director Kote Marjanishvili in 1928. In 1933, the theatre was renamed after Mr. Marjanishvili.  The architecture of People’s House is one of the finest examples of the Art Nouveau style in Tbilisi. The large stucco relief of the main facade reflects the mission of the Peoples’ House. The three characters depicted in Greek tunics are the muses of art, music, and literature and are seen entrusting a book to the three women in traditional Georgian dresses - Georgia aspiring to become a part of rich European cultural heritage while introducing its centuries-old national cultural treasures to Europe and beyond.
