Architects | Mikhail Zadvitsky |
Owners | Nazar Oganov |
Situated at the crossroads of Shalva Dadiani and Lado Asatiani streets, the old house, dating back to the second half of the 19th century, stands as a captivating piece of Tbilisi's history. This location serves as the distinct boundary between the Old Town and Sololaki, once the private residence of Nazar Oganov (Ohanyan), a prominent Tiflis citizen and merchant of the 2nd guild. In 1882, engineer-architect Mikhail Zadvitsky added a second floor with a balcony to enhance the building's architectural allure. The house embodies the quintessential features of a traditional Tbilisi residence from its time, featuring a courtyard, classical façade, a wooden balcony adorned with intricate carvings, and a refrigerator cellar dating back to the 17th-18th centuries. Adding to its historical significance, the basement aligns with the former fortress wall that once descended from the mountainside, traversed Lado Asatiani Street, curved along Shalva Dadiani Street, and extended to Freedom Square and Kote Abkhazi Street. Remarkably, this section of the old fortress wall was demolished in the early 19th century, paving the way for the development of Shalva Dadiani and Alexander Pushkin streets. The meticulous restoration of the house took place in 2017-2018, preserving its rich historical charm for present and future generations to appreciate.
