Necropolis of Kerkouane
Jun 5, 2023

In 1929, a local Islamic schoolteacher stumbled upon the Necropolis of Kerkouane, which is situated approximately 1.5 km (0.93 mi) northwest of the Punic city of Kerkouane in northeastern Tunisia. Consisting of a series of vaults set in a seaside hill, four primary chamber-tombs, and a surrounding burial area, the necropolis was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985 due to being the only surviving example of a Phoenicio-Punic city. The schoolteacher then sold the jewellery, ceramics, and scarab gems he found in the tombs to collectors and treasure hunters. Unfortunately, the large pottery pieces and other heavy items were left in the tombs or destroyed, as they were too bulky to be removed. His source of wealth was eventually revealed to a law officer, who documented the discovery of the necropolis.
