This mansion, located at 737 Buena Vista Avenue West in the Upper Haight section of San Francisco, was the home of Richard Spreckels, Manager of the mammoth Western Sugar Refinery on Potrero Shore. He was a member of the Spreckels Family that owned the refinery, as well as real estate, railroads, and newspapers in CA. Designed by architect Edward J. Vogel, the house was built in 1897. At the time, this large Colonial Revival box style would have been seen as a simpler and more modern departure from the prevailing Queen Anne style in San Francisco. The house was later occupied by such luminaries as Jack London, and Ambrose Bierce (said to have lived in apartments on the top floor). Actor, Danny Glover and his wife, Asaki Bomane, purchased the house for $1,550,000. After their divorce, she retained the house in 2003. Bomane sold the house to 737 Buena Vista LLC for $10,000,000 on 10/20/2014.
