Rio Abiseo National Park

Rio Abiseo National Park, in the San Martín department of Peru, was designated by UNESCO as a Natural and Cultural Heritage of Humanity (World Heritage Site) in 1990. This area of 2,745.2 square kilometres, ranging from 350 metres to 4,200 metres above sea level, houses an abundance of flora and fauna, as well as over 30 pre-Columbian archaeological sites. The park is closed to visitors, as it is deemed too fragile to sustain tourism, and covers 70% of the Abiseo River basin.
