In 1910, the Saroyan family briefly resided in a building at this location. William, not yet 2 years old according to the census, lived here with his father, Armenak, who worked as a preacher for the Salvation Army. Although this detail isn’t apparent in William’s writings, the census records confirm it. Shortly after, Armenak shifted to farming chickens in Campbell but tragically died of a burst appendix and was buried in San Jose. Following his death, the children were placed in the Fred Finch Orphanage in Oakland, while their mother worked in San Francisco.
