William Saroyan loved the hotels of New York, and even when living in the city sometimes set himself up in hotels for weeks at a time. The Hoel St. Regis was one of his favorites, and typically he stayed there when he was flush with money or someone else was footing the bill. Saroyan set himself up for 19 days at the St. Regis while in preparations for "The Cave dwellers," his final original Broadway production. Saroyan would leave the St. Regis for Europe in late May, returning in late July to finish preparations for the play which opened on October 19th, 1957. He would stay at the St. Regis again in 1960, and at least once in the 1970s.
