The landscape of Tbilisi does not provide great opportunities for the development of surface transit systems. With the appearance and development of the metro in the world, the city authorities began to actively think about the implementation of this type of transport in Tbilisi. On September 29, 1951, the Council of Ministers of the USSR decided to build the first metro line in Tbilisi. Tbilisi Metrostroy Department was created in 1952. Under the leadership of engineer Shalva Danelia, who was one of the first Moscow metro builders, the laying of tunnels began in 1953. The Tbilisi metro is the fourth in the USSR - after Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Kyiv. It entered service on January 11, 1966. Located between Tavisuplebis Moedani station and Marjanishvili station, Rustaveli is 60 meters underground (and an escalator length of 120 meters) the deepest station of the Tbilisi metro system.
