Stone spheres of Costa Rica

Over 300 stone spheres of varying sizes can be found in Costa Rica, located on the Diquís Delta and Isla del Caño. Known as bolas de piedra in the local language, these sculptures are most likely attributed to the extinct Diquís culture, and have been called the Diquís Spheres. They are the most famous stone sculptures of the Isthmo-Colombian area and are believed to have been placed in lines along the routes to the homes of chiefs. The purpose of these spheres remains unknown.
