I-Beam, San Francisco, CA.
The I-Beam
Jun 5, 2023

The upper floor housed the I-Beam, the city’s leading new wave rock club of the 1980s, though it closed in the 1990s. Formerly a Masonic Temple and disco, its run as a top venue began with Monday night concerts promoted by DJ Alan Robinson. The Ramones, R.E.M., and the Replacements are just a few of the major acts who appeared here, with the Jesus & Mary Chain and the Flaming Lips sharing the bill on one particularly ear-splitting show just before Christmas 1985. The club closed in mid-1990s, with apartments and retail stores now standing where the venue once thrived.
