Built1919

This 1919 building at 443 Broadway was the leading punk/new wave venue in San Francisco in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and one of the leading in the world, for both local and touring acts. The Mabuhay was a Filipino restaurant during most hours, but was turned over to music concerts late at night. Penelope Houston, singer of one of the early San Francisco punk groups that played key shows here, the Avengers, was a student at the nearby San Francisco Art Institute. The Mabuhay’s punk days are documented in the 2020 book Shut Up You Animals!!!: The Pope Is Dead: A Rememberance [sic] of Dirk Dirksen: The History of the Mabuhay Gardens.
