Tikal, an ancient Mayan city, was known by the name Yax Mutal when it was founded. It is located in El Petén, Guatemala, and is part of the country's Tikal National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is renowned for its extensive ruins, which are among the largest of the pre-Columbian Mayan civilization.
