Westerfield House
Jun 5, 2023

This imposing mansion on the corner of Scott and Fulton was designed and built in 1889 by architect Henry Gelifuss for Wesley Westerfield for $9,985. William Westerfeld, a German-born confectioner, arrived in San Francisco in the 1870s. By the 1880s, he had established a chain of bakeries. He hired builder Henry Geilfuss to design for his family of six a 28-room mansion with an adjoining rose garden and carriage house. The original homeowner died six years later but there is amazing lost list of characters who lived here including musicians, a group of Czarist Russians, wealthy elite of the City among others. The Gothic Victorian also housed a couple of members of the Manson Family. According to the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test book, it was the first of the hippie communes in the 1960's. Jim Siegel, the current owner, purchased the home in 1986, and has remodeled it to its original grandeur. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is San Francisco Landmark Number 135.
