Xochimilco (pronounced [sotʃiˈmilko, ʃotʃiˈmilko] in Spanish; Classical Nahuatl: Xōchimīlco, spoken as [ʃoːtʃiˈmiːlko] listen (help·info)) is a Mexican city borough (demarcación territorial). It is situated in the southeastern aspect of the capital and is noted for its distinctness from the historic center of Mexico City. The area is home to the former independent city of Xochimilco, which was established on the southern shore of Lake Xochimilco during the pre-colonial period. The borough comprises of 18 neighborhoods and 14 local villages, and covers a total area of 125 km2 (48 sq mi).
